Japanese Towels That Feel Different From the First Use

Japanese towels have a different quality to them. They absorb quickly, they dry fast, and they stay soft after repeated washing — the opposite of the thick Western-style towels that lose their texture after a few months. The difference is in how they are made: lighter weaves, better cotton, and in some cases, functional materials woven into the yarn itself.

All three towels in this collection are made by Uchino, a Japanese textile manufacturer based in Imabari — the region responsible for some of Japan's most respected towel production. Uchino has been making towels since 1956 and is known for developing functional fabrics that go beyond standard cotton.

The Kishu Binchotan Charcoal Towel is the signature product. Binchotan charcoal is a traditional Japanese material made from Kishu Ubame Oak, fired at high temperatures to create extremely fine pores. When woven into yarn, it absorbs moisture efficiently and dries quickly, while naturally deodorising the fabric. The result is a towel that stays fresher for longer between washes. The Zen Charcoal Gauze & Pile Towel combines the same charcoal yarn with a gauze and pile construction — lightweight but layered, soft and absorbent. The Uchino Gauze & Pile Towel uses the same structure without charcoal, for a clean everyday option.

In a warm climate like Cyprus, where you are reaching for a towel multiple times a day, quick-drying and freshness matter more than weight.
